Portmoak Moss

Project type

Botanical

Location

Portmoak Moss, Kinross-shire

Is a special place and a rare, raised bog environment approached through a boundary of trees. A sanctuary for many it is a favourite walking place and home to a wide range of flora and fauna. The evidence of human activity over time as a place for villagers to cut peat for fuel results in a scarred beauty where invading fern, and trees cling to the edges of its different levels. The constant presence of water in its ditches and its open crown filled with heather, blaeberry and bog cotton make it a rich environment for birds and insects. It is an environment of profound contrasts and yearlong seasonal interest situated close to Loch Leven, which is a sanctuary for migrating birds, and overlooked by adjacent majestic and legendary hills named the Bishop and the Sleeping Giant.
